Former United States Secretary of State and wife of former President Bill Clinton, Hillary Clinton, has called for the release of arrested Masvingo Councilor Godfrey Kurauzvione.

Clinton took to social media on the issue on Wednesday, adding more headaches for the Mnangagwa administration already facing pressure from all angles over the crackdown In opposition activists, journalists, civic society leaders as well as its recent attack on the clergy.

“I’m calling for the government of Zimbabwe to release all political prisoners, including Godfrey Kurauone, who represent the country’s future. Justice demands it,” she tweeted.

Kurauone, the ward 4 councillor-who is not new to arrests by the Mnangagwa administration is under arrest for allegedly singing and denouncing Mnangagwa.

He was arrested while on bail for another charge of undermining or insulting the president after he allegedly addressed commuters at a long and winding transport queue that their woes were because of Mnangagwa and his sons who are engaging in corruption.

His new charges are that of criminal nuisance for the song, which goes; “Ichava nhoroondo kana ndatenderwa na baba kubvisa Mnangagwa… Ichava nhoroondo’;

Loosely translated the song means, ‘This will be history when I get a directive from my God to dethrone President Emmerson Mnangagwa.”

He is also facing another charge of endangering public safety for allegedly blocking a road and burning tyres on July 31 when citizens, backed by opposition political parties had called for a nationwide demonstration over corruption and escalating human rights abuses.

Last week, Masvingo High Court judge Justice Neville Wamambo denied Kurauone freedom, saying he commited a similar offence while on bail.

The lower courts had also ruled against his freedom bid last week.

His lawyer, Martin Mureri, as well as his wife, said Kurauone is ill but the state is denying him access to his doctor.

Mureri said Kurauone is being politically persecuted after being denied bail and added that they now applied for a trial date so that he proves his innocence.
