A serving member of the Zimbabwe National Army (ZNA), Crispen Maphosa on Thursday left court officials shell shocked after he mysteriously disappeared at the Masvingo High Court where he was supposed to appear in court to answer for murder charges.
Maphosa who is being jointly charged with Tapiwanashe Basopo and Collen Ncube were stationed at HQ1 Brigade in Bulawayo during the time they allegedly committed the crime.
The army men were set to appear at the High Court for continuation of trial but he was nowhere to be found after he disappeared into thin air.
A warrant of arrest has since been issued for Maphosa who is believed to be on the run.
A source who spoke to Centre News said Maphosa left everyone tongue-tied since it was just a continuation of trial not judgement day.
“We were waiting for the court session to resume only to realize that he had escaped. He was out on bail and was just coming for continuation of trial not judgement so we don’t know what made him think escaping was the best option. Even his lawyer could not give a satisfactory answer as to what happened with his client,” the source said.
Maphosa’s lawyer, Dereck Charamba was not reachable for comment as his mobile was not available until the time of publishing.
Army spokesperson, Alphios Makotore said his office hasn’t received a report that a serving member of the army disappeared at court: “No, I haven’t received such a report.”
Maphosa together with his colleagues who were manning Mujingwe conservancy in Mwenezi shot Hosia and Sifelani Matarise after a dispute at Shayamabvudzi Business Centre on December 26, 2019.
Before committing the alleged heinous crime, the trio were already accused of inflicting a reign of terror on locals near the Mujingwe conservancy.
